‘PCs are difficult to set up’, argues PlayStation co-CEO as he sticks up for his precious console’s honour

I’ve been having my fingers crossed for a while now that Sony’s recent success with Helldivers 2 (despite their best efforts) and other ports is a sign that we’ll all get to stop having to sit around and kick dirt for a year whenever there’s a new, great exclusive on the PlayStation we can’t play.

Apparently, my wish magic isn’t very potent, since PlayStation joint-CEO Hideaki Nishino has emphasised in an interview with Nikkei (via VGC) that—surprising nobody—consoles are still going to be a central part of a console company’s strategy for success.

“I think that with mobile devices, there are many games that show advertisements, and PCs are difficult to set up, but with PlayStation, once you turn it on, you can experience the content you bought straight away.”

It is with great frustration that I, as someone with nary a console in sight, must grit my teeth and admit: yeah, that is somewhat true. PCs are difficult to set up from scratch—either you shell out a nonsense amount for a prefab, or you engage in the world’s most stressful version of a LEGO set, where you’re not quite sure if you’ve aligned the CPU’s pins right, or whether that loud c…

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been nominated in five categories at this year’s Gayming Awards-

Gayming Magazine’s annual awards for celebrating queerness in videogames are back for their fourth year. The nominees have been announced and Baldur’s Gate 3 is in the lead, being up for five potential awards: Game of the Year, the Gayming Magazine Readers Award, the Authentic Representation Award, Best LGBTQ Character (two nominations, one for Dame Aylin and one for Shadowheart), and Larian is also in the running for the Industry Diversity Award.

Thirsty Suitors, which we called 2023’s second-best RPG about people who are too horny for their own good, has also done well. It’s been nominated for Game of the Year, Best LGBTQ Indie Game, the Authentic Representation Award, and Best LGBTQ Character for its protagonist, Jala. Tchia, our pick for best open world game of 2023, has another four nominations, while Final Fantasy 16 is up for three awards.

The Gayming Awards show will be held in Los Angeles this year, and will be broadcast on Gayming Magazine’s Twitch and TikTok channels at 2pm ET on April 7. “Our move to a virtual show set in LA not only ensures that the Awards can be made with higher production standards,” said Gayming Awards creator Robin Gray, “but we can …

Chris Avellone accepts ‘seven-figure payment’ to settle libel suit with those who accused him of sexual misconduct-

In June 2020 games writer Chris Avellone, best known for his work on Planescape Torment and the Fallout series, was accused of sexual misconduct on Twitter by two women. At the time Avellone was silent beyond a few brief replies on Twitter (now deleted), but the accusations led to several studios publicly cutting ties with the writer. Around a year after the claims were first made, Avellone publicly denied them and launched a libel suit in California (later re-filed in Illinois), seeking damages for lost work, emotional distress, punitive damages, the costs of the suit, and an injunction against the accusers.

This suit has now been settled, and in a manner favourable to Avellone. His accusers, Karissa Barrows and Kelly Rae Bristol, have signed a joint statement retracting their claims. Ms. Barrows has requested her previous comments to the media be retracted.

The full settlement details are confidential, but it “provides for a seven-figure payment” to Avallone and there are public statements from both sides:

“Mr. Avellone never sexually abused either of us. We have no knowledge that he has ever sexually abused any women. We have no kn…

Destiny 2 fashionistas will finally be rewarded for their sense of style earlier than planned-

The primary reason I play Destiny 2 now is to find new threads for my handsome Guardian—I will stop endless existential threats just so I can look marginally cooler the next time I have to save humanity. And with the upcoming midseason patch, fashionistas are finally going to get kudos for dressing well.

As detailed in This Week at Bungie—where the team also announced a major crackdown on third-party peripheral cheaters—fashion commendations are coming soon. Introduced in Lightfall, commendations are a way for players to reward their fellow Guardians for being good teammates, which also ties into the Guardian Rank system. It encourages playing well together and lets other players know you’re a good egg. And soon, it’ll be possible to award players with commendations for their drip.

Bungie expected players to want this style of commendation when it was developing the system, but ran out of time before it could be implemented.

“Back when we were first developing Commendations, we had a sneaky suspicion that a fashion-focused Commendation would be highly desired,” the Player Identity team says. “As we continued into long-form playtest…

Intel CPU crashes- what you need to know—Intel explains the root cause and plans a final microcode fix for 13th and 14th Gen CPUs

  • Some Intel 13th and 14th Gen CPUs (especially high-end ones) have been crashing, or even failing
  • The issue is caused by high voltages and minimum voltages shifting upwards
  • It affects 13th and 14th Gen CPUs of 65 W Processor Base Power and higher
  • A fix is already available from motherboard manufacturers (0x129) but a more comprehensive solution is on its way (0x12B)
  • If your CPU is affected by elevated operating voltage and you’re experiencing instability, contact Intel customer support

Many PC gamers have understandably been concerned about stability issues facing Intel 13th and 14th Gen CPUs, codename Raptor Lake, and especially the Core i9 13900K and Core i9 14900K.

However, new Intel 13th/14th Gen buyers might need to fear no more because Intel’s not only released a preventative fix in the form of a 0x129 microcode patch but has also just identified the root cause and is rolling out another microcode patch (0x12B) to fix it.

This will be welcome news for many because over the previous months, there were increasing …

This Acer gaming laptop delivers a ton of bang for your buck with a 2000p 165 Hz display, a proper RTX 4070, and 32 GB of DDR5 for $1,500

Sometimes I feel like the magnificent Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 has ruined other laptop chassis designs for me. It’s a milled aluminium wonder and makes just about every other slim 16-inch laptop look lesser by comparison.

That being said, while this Acer Predator Triton Neo 16 is less of a looker, the components you get inside are well worth the money—especially when you can find it at a discount for $1,500 at Amazon. It might not be quite as stunning to behold, but what you get here is seriously tempting for the cash.

Let’s start out with one of the most important components in a gaming laptop build—the GPU. It’s a proper 140 W RTX 4070, which is pretty impressive given that this is still quite a slim and portable laptop design.

The other most important component, I would argue, is the screen. There’s no point pushing a load of glorious gaming pixels if the display’s a bit of a turkey, but you should have no such worries here. This is a 2000p LED backlit IPS panel, with a 165 Hz refresh rate. Again, it’s not going to be as gorgeous or as fast as the OLED display in the Asus, but it’s still plenty speedy and very well-specced.

That 3200 x 2000 …
